Sanam Welcome to If You Were In Charge, with me, Sanam Naraghi Anderlini, founder of ICANN. From my experience working on wars and peacebuilding, I know that behind the depressing headlines, there are always extraordinary people working on solutions. I'm doing this series to hear from them working on other issues. So from biodiversity to police violence, my guests are tackling major challenges, and I ask them, what would you do if you were in charge? Like Abby Disney, who was fighting to see the uber-wealthy pay their share of taxes. (.) You know, when I talk to my kids about what they see in the world and how they're dealing with it, one of the issues that comes up, of course, is disparity of wealth. I call it extreme capitalism. It's like we're not against capitalism, but I am against extreme capitalism.

Speaker (clip) Yes, exactly. I've been calling it fundamentalist capitalism. So we're on the same page about it, and it has the same quality as a fundamentalist faith system. In the sense that it will take you to crazy places. (.)

Sanam Along for the ride is one of my twin daughters, Sole, who's doing graduate work at Cambridge on plastic pollution. Their generation hears less about the solutions and people working on them, but knows a lot about the problems. So I want to get her perspective.

Speaker (clip) Quite ominous and like almost dystopic groups of policemen. We could go right up to them, like six inches. //S01: Yeah, we could, and you were.// And me and Lydia were like freaking out because we're like, why are you going up to this person? (..)

Sanam I wanted to test how disciplined they were and how, you know, whether they would say hello to me.

Speaker (clip) No sense of self-preservation. Clearly they're not disciplined.
